About N.D. Cartwright
FROM READER TO WRITER
I was the kid with a flashlight under the blanket, trespassing through Middle-earth and Earthsea long after I was meant to be asleep. Fantasy and science fiction were not an escape from the world — they were the place I first learned how to look at it.
Years later I made a home inside the academy, earning a graduate degree in writing and reading my way through every dark, difficult, morally tangled novel I could find. The books that mattered most were never the ones with easy answers. They were the ones that admitted the cost.
For most of my adult life I wrote about other people's stories. Eventually that became unbearable. So I left the safe career, picked up the pen name I had been quietly carrying for years, and started writing the book I had been waiting my whole life to read.
WHAT I WRITE
Dark fantasy and science fiction for readers who want their worlds to bleed a little. Stories where power is never clean, hope is always expensive, and the people caught between empire and ruin are the ones worth following.
THE JOURNEY SO FAR
The Early Years
A Lifelong Reader
Tolkien, Le Guin, Herbert. The first worlds I learned to live inside taught me that story is the truest map of being human.
University
Graduate Studies in Writing
Years inside the craft — workshops, theory, and a stubborn love for genre fiction the academy didn't quite know what to do with.
The Pivot
The Decision to Write
After a career spent reading other people's books, I finally sat down to write the one I had been waiting for.
Now
The Debut Novel (In Progress)
Two years deep into the manuscript. A dark fantasy about power, poverty, and the people caught between. Coming soon.
